Training & Outreach Specialist
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $48,000 - $60,000
Starting Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience
The State Corporation Commission (“SCC”) is seeking a Training & Outreach Specialist to fill a position in the Division of Utility and Railroad Safety (“URS”). The Training & Outreach Specialist will be instrumental in expanding the Division’s outreach and training programs, which aim to prevent damage to underground utilities as well as advance railroad safety. The Training & Outreach Specialist will work with diverse communities and will work particularly closely with a senior team member to administer the Operation Lifesaver rail safety program throughout the Commonwealth. The administration of this program will include attending outreach events across the Commonwealth and providing educational presentations. The candidate selected for this position will develop outreach and informational materials and will assist with providing damage prevention training, reviewing data, and maintaining partnerships with stakeholders. Additional responsibilities include assisting with preparing, reviewing, and editing social media, media releases, and reports. Conducting face to face training programs will require travel within Virginia, including occasional overnight travel. This position offers a hybrid work schedule (generally 3 days of telework, 2 days in office), on-the-job training, and professional development opportunities.
Preferred qualifications for this position include professional experience providing training to adults, experience working with outreach programs, and/or a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus and helpful for training and outreach events but it not a requirement. Knowledge of learning styles and cultural norms is preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential as well as strong presentation skills. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented and highly organized. Candidates must have the ability to maintain effective, professional working relationships with SCC staff, industry personnel, and the general public. Applicants must be able to complete frequent day trips and occasional overnight travel to conduct training and outreach programs, both in classroom settings and in the field. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop is preferred.

This position will be classified in the SCC Salary Structure as a Grade P-7 or P-9, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and will be exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
